(3 hrs.) After an unsuccessful suicide attempt, Union lieutenant John W. Dunbar is reassigned to a post in remote South Dakota. There, he encounters Sioux Indians and becomes attracted to the natural simplicity of their lifestyle, and he chooses to leave his former life behind to join them. However, his past catches up with him and his peaceful existence becomes threatened.
