Notice: On Wednesday night, 8/22, one of the Virginia Theatre’s two vintage Norelco AA-II reel-to-reel projectors broke down, and, sadly, we were unable to fix the problems in time for our planned 7 o’clock screening of 2001 in 70mm. To everyone in attendance this evening, we deeply regret having to cancel – the first such episode in many years. Repairs have now been made, and we’re excited to return to screening Stanley Kubrick’s masterwork beginning Thurs, Aug 23, at 7pm!
The Virginia’s “AAs” (short for “Academy Award”, being the only film projector to ever receive one) are carefully maintained and operated by experienced professionals, but, along with 2001: A Space Odyssey, our projectors turned 50 this year, and issues can indeed crop up from time to time. We are so sorry for the inconvenience at Wednesday’s cancellation and want to make sure that all in attendance know that their tickets will be honored at the remaining screenings in this run (Thurs, Fri, & Sat, 7pm; and Sat/Sun, 1pm, Aug 23-26).
Please contact our box office at 356.9063 if you have any questions, and thank you!

Rated G (161 min) 2001 turns 50 this year, and we’re celebrating at the Virginia with a full week of screenings of Stanley Kurbick’s masterpiece on a new 70mm print struck from the original negative, without any digital remastering, effects, or edits. This is as close as you can get to the legendary film’s original 1968 presentation, when it was projected in 70mm on Cinerama screens nationwide.
