The Virginia Theatre may be dark for now, but the desire among our patrons to enjoy great cinema is stronger than ever. That’s why we’ve created Virtual Virginia Theatre. With the help of our partner film distributors, you can now rent select movie titles to stream at home whenever you’d like. It’s easy and quick!

For our fans we’ve also curated a few free selections here of the type of classic films you might normally expect to see on the Virginia’s big screen.

We’ll be offering Virginia Virtual Theatre through September, 2020. Titles to change weekly, so check back often this summer!

With the help of Rufus an ultra cool messenger in a time traveling phone booth, the triumphant twosome bag a bevy of historical heavyweights like the Bodacious Philosopher Socrates, One Very Excellent Barbarian Genghis Khan, the Short Dead Dude Napoleon and Noah’s Wife Joan of Arc to stage the most hysterical high school project ever. History’s about to be rewritten by two guys who can’t even spell.

HEAVEN CAN WAIT (1943)

A classic Ernst Lubitsch comedy. This 1943 film was produced and directed by Lubitsch and tells the story of a man who has to prove he belongs in Hell by telling his life story. It stars Gene Tierney, Don Ameche, and Charles Coburn.

The film was nominated for Academy Awards in both the Best Picture and Director categories and is an enduring classic that showcases the filmmaker’s trademark blend of wit, urbanity, and grace.

Note: 1978’s Heaven Can Wait is a remake of an entirely different film, Here Comes Mr. Jordan (1941), which in turn was based on a 1938 stage play originally titled Heaven Can Wait.
